An ONU (Optical Network Unit) is a device used in fiber-optic internet (FTTH) that converts optical signals (light) into electrical signals (Ethernet) that your computer or router can understand. It is the endpoint of the ISP’s fiber network at your home or office.

If you have a fiber-optic connection, the cable coming into your house is made of glass. Since your router cannot “read” light, it needs a translator. The ONU sits between the fiber cable and your router.

  • The Connector Mismatch Warning: Fiber cables use different connectors. SC/APC (Green) and SC/UPC (Blue) are NOT compatible. Plugging a blue connector into a green ONU port will damage the device and cause permanent speed drops.
  • Power Sensitivity: ONUs are sensitive to power fluctuations. Many “No Internet” issues in Bangladesh are caused by the ONU freezing or losing its configuration after a power cut.

  • Los Red Light: If the “LOS” (Loss of Signal) light on your ONU is blinking red, the fiber cable is physically broken or disconnected. You must call your ISP.
  • PON Light: The “PON” light should be solid green. If it’s blinking, the ONU is trying to authenticate with the ISP but failing.
  • Check RX Power: You can log into your ONU web interface (usually 192.168.1.1) to check the Optical RX Power. A healthy range is between -8 dBm to -27 dBm. If it is lower than -28 dBm, your connection will be unstable.

    • A: Most basic ONUs in Bangladesh do not have Wi-Fi. You still need a separate Wi-Fi Router. However, some “Combo” devices (ONU + Router) do exist.
