GPON vs EPON
There are two primary standards used by ISPs in Bangladesh:
- GPON (Gigabit PON): The most widely used standard. It supports asymmetrical speeds (2.4 Gbps downstream and 1.2 Gbps upstream) and is highly efficient at handling voice, data, and video traffic simultaneously.
- EPON (Ethernet PON): A simpler, Ethernet-based standard offering symmetrical 1.25 Gbps speeds. While cheaper to deploy, it lacks the advanced traffic management features of GPON.
Key Components
- OLT (Optical Line Terminal): The “brain” of the network located at the ISP’s central office. It converts electrical signals from the provider’s core network into optical signals.
- Optical Splitters: Passive devices that split a single fiber strand into multiple paths (e.g., 1:32 or 1:64) to serve many customers from one OLT port.
- ONU/ONT (Optical Network Unit/Terminal): The device installed at your home. It converts the light signal back into an Ethernet signal that your router can understand.
Bangladesh Context
In Bangladesh, FTTH has seen a massive surge in adoption over the last decade, primarily replacing the “UTP-based” model.
- Overhead Fiber: Unlike developed nations where fiber is buried underground, most Bangladeshi ISPs deploy “overhead” fiber hanging from electric poles. This makes it susceptible to physical damage from storms or road construction.
- The UTP Legacy: Many older residential buildings still use “UTP Internet,” where an ISP runs a single fiber to a building switch and then distributes internet via Cat5/6 cables. Moving to FTTH (fiber directly to your room) eliminates the “shared switch” bottleneck and improves latency.
- Real-world Performance: FTTH enables local ISPs to offer dedicated bandwidth and seamless access to BDIX and global caches (Google, Facebook, Netflix).

- Is fiber internet affected by rain? No. Since fiber optics use light signals, the data transmission is not affected by rain, humidity, or lightning. However, if the physical overhead cable is broken by falling branches or heavy wind during a storm, you will lose connection.
- Do I need a special router for FTTH? You need an ONU (provided by the ISP) which connects to a standard WiFi router. Some “XPON” routers combine both the ONU and WiFi router into one device.
